ⓘ Tai Pī (province)
Tai Pī is a province of Nuku Hiva, in the Marquesas Islands, an administrative subdivision of French Polynesia. The settlement follows the line of the valley and the stream that passes from its mountainous island surroundings.
Herman Melville, known as Tommo in the narrative Melvilles were famously got here when, as a young whaling ship sailor, he deserted ship mate, Toby Greene. Its an experience that lasted in total four weeks was the subject of Herman Melvilles first book Typee: a peep at Polynesian life. It arrived the next day the French sailed into Nuku Hiva and began firing the gun, thereby declaring it a French protectorate.
Thus, the history of the Melvilles is a tribes, and all the islanders of Nuku Hiva native way of life prior to the opening of Islands to the outside world and the suppression that followed. Their way of life, the environment and condition made the young Melville think he was in the garden of Eden. It depicts their daily lives as joyful, carefree and innocent, and strikingly free from the cares of the Western world. The man makes a living by simply grazing in a rich tropical vegetation, and teaches his son in the society. There is almost no difference between the possessions of the islanders, and their houses are built at all and not completely fixed abode. This way of life was to rapidly decline and change with the arrival of the Europeans, as will be shown in the second book Melvilles, although OMOO has nothing to do with tai Pī.
