Model organisms have been used in the study of FAM73B function. A conditional knockout mouse line, called Fam73b tm1aKOMPWtsi was generated as part of the International Knockout Mouse Consortium program - a high-throughput mutagenesis project to generate and distribute animal models of disease to interested scientists.

Male and female animals underwent a standard screen to determine the phenotypic consequences of the deletion. Twenty-four tests were performed on mutant mice and observed six significant deviations. Homozygous mutant animals have reduced body weight, change body composition, abnormal tooth morphology, hypoalbuminemia, reduced mineral content in bone tissue and strength, as well as increased susceptibility to bacterial infection.
